Lying just north of Lough Gowna just inside the County Cavan Border, Arvagh is well known for it's access to quality coarse fishing. Of historic interest is the nearby Bruse Hill which has three stone cairns dating from the neolithic period.

The town has a hotel which boasts a restaurant, bar and nightclub. There are also several pubs in the town. The town hosts the annual Arvagh Agricultural Show.
