The little village of Mountnugent on the eastern bank of Lough Sheelin has one pub, one shop and a petrol station. Lough Sheelin is noted as the premier brown trout lake in Europe. Fishery scientists state Sheelin has the largest trout carrying capacity of any lough in Ireland - over 100,000 trout with at least 40,000 of them between 2 and 4lb. The season runs from 1 March to the 30th September. Self catering Mountnugent visitors will enjoy the the Mountnugent Festival which the festival hosts in August.
