Downings marks the start and finish of the spectacular Atlantic Drive, a 12 kilometre stretch of road running along the glorious Rosguill Peninsula reavealing breathtaking views over Sheephaven Bay, Horn Head, and Mulroy Bay. The area is renowned for its deep sea angling. Shark fishing and wreck fishing are extremely popular, as is fishing for Bluefin Tuna which pass the north west of Ireland on their migration route. The dunes on the Rosguill peninsula are home to the splendid Rosapenna Golf Links, where the original hotel and clubhouse were once frequented by John Wayne and Errol Flynn.The area is also great for watersports; the Mevagh Dive Centre in Carrigart offers 10 to 70 metre dives in beautiful crystal waters. Carrigart Riding Stables offer exciting horse and pony treks across miles of beautiful beaches, dunes, and forestry trails. Well worth a visit are Doe Castle, Ards Forest Park, and Glenveagh National Park and Castle only minutes away by car. Downings Beach is great for sailing and windsurfing courses, while Tramore Beach is an idylic paradise, great for long pleasant walks on a landscape that will take your breath away.
