TOWNS AND VILLAGES IN DONEGAL

Glencolmcille is named after St. Colmcille (Columba) who founded a monastery here in the 6th century. The Saint went into exile on the isle of Iona, off the west coast of Scotland following a dispute with the church about the right to copy manuscripts. It is believed the area has been inhabited since 3000BC and there are plenty of Stone Age remains to explore.
After driving past miles and miles of countryside a beautiful green valley finally appears brushed against the ocean and here lies the picturesque village of Glencolmcille. It is a place of tremendous natural beauty with the Slieve League cliffs, Glen Head and the stunning Silver Strand at Malin Beg.
Visit the Folk Village or take an Irish class or activity class at the well known learning institute of Oideas Gael. There is a new walking centre near the beach which provides information on different grades of walks around the area. The area is a mecca for traditional music so when you want to relax, stroll between the atmospheric pubs and enjoy the music, a chat and a Guinness.
