The largest town in County Kildare, Athy lies at the intersection of the River Barrow and the Grand Canal both of which provide excellent fishing possibilities.

Self catering Athy visitors will enjoy the Athy Heritage Centre which contains the only permanent exhibition to the great explorer Ernest Shackelton who was born in the area. The Shackelton Autumn School is held annually and attracts international guests who speak about Antartica and Shackelton's life. The 16th Century White's Castle overlooks the bridge in the town. There is a 9 hole golf course, tennis courts and swimming pool.
