Straddling both banks of the River Nore in the centre of the county, Kilkenny city was the ancient capital of the Kingdom of Ossory. It's medieval castle is well known and it's history stretches back to the 9th century It makes for an interesting visit.
Self catering Kilkenny visitors will enjoy the city which is culturally rich with good art galleries, historic buildings, theatre, museums and gardens. It hosts the Kilkenny Arts Festival in August each year as well as the annual Smithwicks Cat Laughs comedy festival. There's also an annual concert in Nolan Park which has attracted the likes of Bob Dylan and Andrea Bocelli.
