Abbeyleix lies 14 km south of Portlaoise and is known for it's tree lined streets. The town has good facilities such as a 9 hole golf course, a hotel and tennis courts.

There's good fishing on the area too on the nearby River Nore. In the town, the old Patrician Monastery functions as a heritage house and provides information on the town's history.
