In the west of County Laois between the towns of Roscrea and Mountrath, Borris-in-Ossory was developed around the ruins of 15th century Fitzpatrick Castle.

Cluain Ferta Molua, to the north of the village, is the site of a 6th century monastery which is referred to in many ancient European manuscripts.
