Mountrath is near Borris-in-Ossory and Aghaboe. The town hosts a 9 hole golf course and fishing os good in the surrounding area. Nearby Ballymore Castle is open to the public.

There's an old Wish Tree near the town called St. Finton's Well. Dropping a penny here is said to bring good luck.
