Portlaoise is the county town of County Laois and is located in the heart of the Irish Midlands. The town, which has a long history of being a commercial and cultural centre, has good amenities including an 18 hole golf course.

Portlaoise Jazz festival takes place every year in June. Of historical note are the nearby Dunamase Castle and the gardens at Emo.
