TOWNS AND VILLAGES IN LAOIS
Well known for it's impressive 12th century round tower, the County Laois village of Timahoe lies in a broad valley 12 km south of Portlaoise. The villages houses are built around what is locally known as The Goosegreen.
There has been a monastic community here since the 7th century right up until c.1650 when the friars were murdered by Colonel Hewson's troops at a spot now known as "Boher a wurther" - the murdering road.
