Seven miles away, near the Shannon Estuary, is the small town of Foynes, where up until 1946 a Flying Boat Station was in operation, with regular flights available to major destinations such as New York and Montreal. A replica Boeing 314 flying boat can be seen at the Foynes Flying Boat Museum. Nearby Foynes, is the town of Glin, home to Glin Castle, the original residence of the Knight of Glin, now a luxury hotel.
