Edgeworthstown owes it's name to the Edgeworth family who first settled here in 1583. The family is associated with many famous literary and historical figures such as Sir Walter Scott and the sister of Oscar Wilde.

A visitor's centre is being developed in the Old School House to honour the town's history.
