Newtowncashel, with it's well maintained buildings and stone walls, is near Lough Ree. The nearby Elfeet Bay has amenities for boating and and fishing and makes a pleasant site for walking.

The restored Saint's Island Abbey and Barley Harbour are worth a visit. The village is also noted for it's bog-wood sculptures.
