There is also rare Artic Char in the lake, the only surviving fish since the ice age, a protected species and prohibited from fishing.

There are many interesting places to visit including Westport, considered one of the best towns in Ireland for entertainment, good food, leisure facilities and Irish music. The annual Westport Music Festival is held in August, the Westport Arts Festival in October and the popular Westport Wellness Festival in February. Don't miss the stunning Westport House or the medieval village of Aughagower, where Saint Patrick passed through on his way to Croagh Patrick. Ballintuber Abbey is where the famous pilgrimage St. Patrick's walk starts every July. The quaint village of Leenane is located on the Killary Fjord the only Fjord in Western Europe.
