Athlone is a substantial town right on the border of County Roscommon and County Westmeath and is located on the River Shannon at the south of Lough Ree. It is almost exactly in the middle of ireland.

The town is well known for it's annual "All-Ireland Drama Festival." It's proximity to the lake and river means it's a good spot for anglers and boaters. There's a marina and a yacht club here. Check out Sean's Bar which is said by some to be the oldest pub in the British Isles.
