Killahara Castle is a unique 500 year old Irish Castle set among the beautiful hills in Tipperary.
This wonderful authentic Irish Castle, first built by Chief Donagh O'Fogartie around 1550, has undergone extensive renovation to make sure the accommodation is as comfortable as possible while retaining much of its ancient charm. The castle is fully heated and has all the necessary appliances of modern living. There is a luxury penthouse suite on the top with amazing 360 degree views of the fabulous countryside.
There are 7 bedrooms to sleep 12 people (and an additional 2 on camp beds if required). The ancient spiral stairs, unchanged for hundreds of years take you up through the five floors of the castle with hand rails allowing easy movement between levels.
The secret stone tunnels lead to toilets and showers. The ground floor contains a large dining room and kitchen with a refectory dining table. The first floor is a bright living room where the old Chief would have entertained guests in front of the great open hearth fireplace.
Killahara Castle is in Dovea Village, 3 miles from Thurles, nestled in the beautiful Suir Valley. It is an ideal base for fishing, horse-riding, cycling, golf and hill-walking. Thurles is surrounded by the Silvermine Mountains to the northwest and the Slieveardagh Hills to the southeast.
Thurles is famous as being the place where GAA was founded in 1884, Irelands biggest Sport. There are many places of interest to visit including the Famine Museum, the Romanesque Cathedral of the Assumption, the Lár na Páirce - The Story of Gaelic Games, a Genealogical Centre and St Mary's Famine Church. There are also many fine restaurants and Irish pubs nearby to enhance your Irish experience.
Killahara Castle is a wonderful location for family reunions, birthday celebrations or occasions with a difference. For those who want to shut the world out for a few days it is the perfect exclusive retreat. Why not be King or Queen of an ancient Irish Castle for a holiday of a lifetime!
