Athlone is a substantial town on the border between County Westmeath and County Roscommon and is located on the River Shannon at the south of Lough Ree. It is almost exactly in the middle of ireland.

The town is well known for it's annual "All-Ireland Drama Festival." It's proximity to the lake and river means it's a good spot for anglers and boaters. There's a marina and a yacht club here.

Check out the seriously historic Sean's Bar which is said by some to be the oldest pub in Ireland and Britain, (all owners since 900 AD are on record).
